The benefits of prenuptial agreements

Many Americans are currently planning their summer weddings. Summer can be a wonderful time to get married, although it remains important to plan for certain possible mishaps. For example, if you are getting married outdoors, you have likely figured out some sort of backup plan in case of rain or other problematic weather conditions. Although it is generally healthy to hope for the best, it tends to be wise to plan for the “worst.”

This logic also applies to the legal nature of marriage. Hopefully, your marriage will be solid, healthy, happy and will withstand the tests of time. However, it is possible that your marriage may not last. If you prepare for this possibility, you are not undermining your marriage or your feelings for your partner. You are simply being smart and preparing for “rain.”

In addition, it should be noted that the process of drafting prenuptial agreements often helps couples strengthen their marriages by compelling them to talk through certain hot-button issues, like finances, before they tie the knot. Leaving these kinds of discussions until after the wedding can lead to serious marital tensions which can be prevented by working through tough issues before they become a source of frustration.

It should also be noted that not all premarital agreements are alike. Depending on the laws of the state in which you live, you may be able to customize your prenuptial agreement in a variety of ways. Speaking with an attorney about prenuptial agreements in advance of your wedding may help you to strengthen your marriage and prepare for “rain” at the same time.
