Washington residents may wish to appeal property division rulings

Many individuals may become attached to certain possessions over the years. Some assets may hold sentimental value because they were gifts or were otherwise meaningful to a particular individual. On the other hand, individuals may wish to hold on to property that has monetary value. Whatever the case, property division during divorce could put Washington residents on edge as it is determined which individual may be entitled to what property.

A recent case in another state saw a man appeal a divorce court ruling after his now ex-wife was awarded custody of a 1994 sports car. It was unclear what may have caused the judge originally handling the case to grant the woman ownership. Additionally, it was reported that the man would apparently have to pay the woman $13,000 if he wished to get the car back.

Though this ruling was handed down, the man decided to appeal the decision. During his appeal, it was revealed that the car, a Chevrolet Corvette, had been given to him by his grandparents more than a decade before the couple married in 2012. It was also noted that the couple had never use the vehicle together. As a result, the appellate court ruled in favor of the man, and the car was returned to him.

As this case indicates, parties may not always be pleased with the property division outcomes during divorce. Luckily, parties do have options to appeal certain decisions or seek modifications. Washington residents who are interested in such action may wish to determine whether they have cause to pursue modifications, and discussing their cases with an experienced family law attorney may be prudent.
