Trends show bright future for support of same-sex marital rights

It may seem to some that we are currently living in a political climate that is less than tolerant of rights for the LGBT community. But though the ascendency of the Trump administration and Republican party may have given rise to concerns regarding the legal treatment of LGBT citizens, it should also be noted that research indicates an overall positive shift in society's attitudes.

According to survey statistics released by the Pew Research Center, only 33 percent of Republicans favor same-sex marriage, compared to 70 percent of Democrats. Liberal Democrats are polled as being especially positive on the issue, with 83 percent favoring same-sex marriage.

But where we see exceptionally good news is among younger Americans. The vast majority, Seventy-three percent, of those under the age of 30 expressed support for same-sex marriage. Age appears to absolutely be a factor regarding the approval of same-sex marriage as 61 percent of 30 to 49-year-olds, 47 percent of 50 to 64 percent, and 38 percent of those 65 and up are supportive of marital rights for same sex couples.

So, the trend is clear and that is good news. We don't know for sure what sorts of issues may be brought to bear with our current political circumstances, but in the long run, the picture is positive.

And in Washington,same-sex couples have the same rights as different-sex couples. This means whether you are approaching marriage and want to get a prenuptial agreement or your relationship is ending and have divorce-related issues to resolve, you can likely use the aid of an experienced family law attorney. And when searching for an attorney, it is in your best interest to choose one who is empathic to the needs of LGBT couples and who stays abreast of all pertinent laws that could affect them.
